The world of male skincare is fast growing and becoming ever more popular – and rightly so, our skin is our protection from all of the elements and adopting a great skincare routine is one of the best ways to help it maintain its quality and protect against sun damage and ageing. In this blog Trikwan Aesthetics’ Dr Sanjay shares his top tips and essential ingredients to include in every man’s skincare routine.
Essential #1: Retinol
A derivative of Vitamin A, Retinol is a powerful tool to include in your daily skincare routine. It comes in a spectrum of strengths and should be applied at night as it will make your skin more sensitive to the sun. When you are new to using Retinol you should start off with usage only 2-3 times a week as your skin gets used to it and you may experience some irritation to start but this should subside with continued use. Retinol is a great all-round product to treat a multitude of skin concerns; it boosts collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve the skin’s quality and any roughness you may be experiencing; it tackles any pigmentation caused by sun damage and exposure. Finally, Retinol also targets the pores, reducing their size and reducing scarring that many men suffer with.
Essential #2: Moisturiser
Shaving creams and foams, along with other substances that the skin contacts during shaving can really dry out the skin and this is why it is essential to find an effective moisturiser that can combat this dryness. Working a good, non-comedogenic moisturiser into your daily skincare will help to hold moisture at the surface of your skin, therefore aiding the barrier protection function of your skin and helping maintain your skin’s quality long term.
Essential #3: Sun Protection
Any sun protection you incorporate into your morning skincare routine should be at least SPF 30 and UVA 4* to effectively protect against the aging effects of the sun’s rays. As Dr Sanjay tells us, ‘the sun is the most potent thing to attack your skin’ and sun damage is very prevalent, we can see evidence of it on everybody’s skin. While skin cancer is rightly a big concern, we often forget about the effects the sun has on the aging of our skin, causing increased volume loss, fine lines and wrinkles. By wearing an effective sun-block you can greatly reduce the ability of the sun to cause these effects and speed up the aging process of your skin. Find out more in our sun protection blog.
Alongside these 3 essential ingredients, Dr Sanjay recommends incorporating a couple of other additions into your regular skincare routine.
Addition #1: Gentle Facial Exfoliator
An exfoliator is a great way to remove dead skin cells and refresh the skin’s surface, however it’s important to find a gentle exfoliator without large, rough granules in it. Dr Sanjay says how he used to use a classic apricot exfoliator just like this, until he learned how rough and abrasive this type of formulation is, he told us that this can actually cause more harm than good, increasing pigmentation damage rather than combating your skin concerns!
Addition #2: Obagi ClenziDerm Pore Therapy
This Salicylic Acid based therapy de-clogs pores and helps to reduce the development of blackheads, leaving your skin clearer and smoother without the presence of impurities in your pores. Dr Sanjay personally recommends this product as one he has included in his own skincare routine to target his pores and improve his skin’s overall appearance.
Trikwan’s Dr Sanjay and Dr Zoya will hold a face-to-face personalised skincare consultation when you book in with them at our Harley Street or Mayfair Clinics, where they will recommend the best Obagi products to address your specific skincare concerns.

What our patients really think...
The most professional, down to earth, friendly aestheticians I could of wished for. I was pretty hesitant to get anything done to my face as I didn’t want the typical over done ‘instagram’ look.
I wasn’t pressured into doing anything outright and was told about all the possible options I could take and the differences between them and what would suit me. I have had two sessions and over that time, I am beyond pleased with the the results! Dr Zoya has masterfully kept my face the same but just enhanced and corrected things certain in places.
Would definitely recommend if you want a realistic, subtle, natural yet major improvement to any problem areas.
Visited Trikwan today in London from NYC and it was such a pleasure. Tammy the office manager was so super helpful and nice, she made the whole booking process very easy and was happy to answer any/ all questions. Both Drs were amazing, friendly and professional. They really took the time to work with me and discuss all my needs and wants. I highly recommend this establishment and will be going back! A+
