Caesarean, Surgical Scarring
If you have given birth via caesarean section (C-section), you will likely be left with a 10-20cm scar in your lower tummy. This is a normal result of this kind of surgery and while you heal there are 4 stages your body will go through to create and, eventually, minimise the appearance of this scar. The 1st stage is the haemostasis phase, which happens during surgery. Blood will rush to the site of the wound and clot to try to stop the bleeding. Stage 2 is the inflammatory stage, which will continue for the first week or so after surgery as cells move to the site to heal the wound. Stage 3 is the proliferative stage, where tissue around the wound contracts to draw the edges of the wound closer together and close the skin; this takes place over the first month after surgery. The final stage is the remodelling stage, which can last for 2+ years. During this time deeper structures are healing and at the surface the scar will get smaller and begin to change to a colour closer to your skin tone.
