If you suffer with stubborn pockets of fat in the chin region, then Aqualyx may be the treatment for you. The Double chin (also known as the submental fat) is the most common area we treat with Aqualyx.
Aqualyx is designed to remove stubborn areas of fat in the face and neck which are resistant to diet and exercise changes. Dissolved fat cells will not return or re-develop; therefore, this is a permanent procedure as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise.
The active substance, deoxycholate causes the break-down of fat cells and the release of fatty acids which are eliminated by the body’s normal metabolic processes. The number of treatments required differ from patient to patient. Generally, 2 to 4 sessions are required, with intervals of 4 to 6 weeks to obtain successful results.
The treatment begins to work immediately. Swelling in the area is a common side effect for the first week or so and should be anticipated. Unfortunately, there is no way to speed this process up but this inflammation actually helps to give the best results, as it causes tissue contraction in the area.

Q. What is Aqualyx?
AQUALYX is an injectable, hydrous, micro-gelatinous solution, which is biocompatible and biodegradable. It causes the dissolution of fat cells, after which the body then expels the released fatty acids naturally. AQUALYX is a complex containing detergent from the deoxycholate family that has been physically modified in order to reduce the biological half-life and the sugar-based slow-release system results in minimal side effects.
Q. What are the aftercare procedures?
- The treated area should not be exposed to direct heat (sauna, sun, etc.) or severe cold.
- Physical exercise should be avoided for approx. 4 to 5 days.
- Application of cosmetics to the treated area should be avoided for at least 12 hours.
- Intake of anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen etc.) should be avoided
- Adherence to nutritional protocol
Q. Am I suitable?
This treatment is suitable for anyone that has stubborn areas of fat that despite healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise, are difficult to get rid of. This treatment is used to improve and alter the contours of the body. However, this treatment isn’t intended for weight loss therefore is not suitable for anyone outside of their ideal BMI.
Q. Treatment, Travelling and Big Events?
Travelling:
Flying can increase the chances of swelling after your treatment, this isn’t a problem and it is still possible to travel around your appointment, but we would recommend using ice to combat any swelling that you experience.
Big Events:
We advise booking far in advance of any big events you have coming up, to allow any swelling to subside and allow us to address any issues or top ups that my need performing to maximise your results. We ask all of our patients who have big events coming up, to get in contact with us before booking so we can best arrange your treatment to happen at the recommended number of weeks before your event.

Q. What is the difference between this treatment and Belkyra
Aqualyx and Belkyra contain the same active ingredient, however Belkyra is a stronger and more effective treatment than Aqualyx. Belkyra also has the added benefit of being the only FDA approved submental fat injection treatment in the UK.
