Melasma
Melasma is a severe form of hyper-pigmentation that affects women more than men, is commonly developed during pregnancy (hence its nickname – the ‘pregnancy mask’) and affects more people from Asian and Latin-American backgrounds. If it occurs during pregnancy, melasma is often called ‘Chloasma’ instead. The condition is marked by a symmetrical hyperpigmentation across the face on the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose and the chin. Often the pigmentation caused by melasma can be worsened by hormonal changes, stress and sun exposure. While the causes of Melasma are not fully known, there is strong evidence that inflammatory processes are one of the main causes for increased melanin pigment production in melasma.
