Acne Scarring
We know that severe acne can take a real toll on those of our patients who have it, and if not treated early, one of the long-lasting complications can be acne scarring. Acne scarring is permanent scarring of the skin as a result of the picking or squeezing of spots which then damages nearby skin. There are 3 main types of acne scar that you might notice:
- Ice pick scars, which are small deep holes in the skin’s surface
- Boxcar scars, which are round or oval depressions in the skin
- Rolling scars, which are due to layers of scar tissue building up beneath the skin’s surface and give the skin a ‘rolling’ appearance
Combinations of these types of scarring on large areas of the skin, along with any hyperpigmentation resulting from acne, can leave the skin with an uneven, rolling texture and tone that can have knock on effects on your confidence and self-esteem. Acne scarring may see some improvement over time but will not fully go away on its own, meaning treatment is required to significantly reduce the appearance of these scars.
