The hands are much more vulnerable to the factors that speed up the the processes of ageing and therefore they can be one of the first places we will start to see the typical signs of ageing. Being frequently exposed to the sun, cold weather and handwashing (among others) means that we begin to notice loss of volume, crepey skin, dehydration and wrinkles more quickly on our hands than elsewhere on the body. Loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, along with fat loss as we age are the main culprit behind volume loss and crepey skin, especially in the back of the hand. Meanwhile our hands are working hard everyday and become exposed to lots of substances that can dry out the skin; many of us don’t pay the same attention to our hands that we do our faces so this dehydration can worsen if we’re not careful.
